What is MIM Parts ?
Metal powder injection molding technology (referred to as MIM) is the introduction of modern plastic injection molding technology into the field of powder metallurgy and the formation of a new powder metallurgy near-net formation technology.
Characteristics of MIM Parts
Complex Shapes And High Precision
MIM technology is well suited to the production of complex assemblies, as it allows for the production of complex geometries and highly detailed parts, often with an accuracy of ±0.1mm.
High Productivity
The MIM process enables the simultaneous production of multiple parts in a single mold, thereby greatly increasing productivity and reducing unit costs.
High Material Utilization
Compared to traditional processing methods, MIM has less material waste because the raw material is fully utilized in the mold.
Excellent Mechanical Properties
MIM parts usually have very good mechanical properties and strength, especially when using the right powder material and appropriate process parameters.
Reduction In Machining Requirements
In many cases, MIM parts can be used directly in the final application, reducing or even eliminating the need for subsequent machining.
High Design Flexibility
MIM allows complex design degrees of freedom, enabling design features that are difficult to achieve with traditional machining methods.
MIM Parts Process
The MIM (Metal Injection Molding) fabrication process involves a number of steps, from raw material preparation to the manufacture of the final part. The following are the main steps in the MIM manufacturing process:
- Powder preparation: selection of mixed metal powders with binding agents.
- Injection molding: Injection of a strip of mixture into a mold to form the initial shape of the part.
- Degreasing: Removal of binding agents from preliminarily molded parts.
- Sintering: Heating of degreased parts to fuse metal powder particles to form a solid structure.
- Post-processing: Machining and other work on the part to achieve the final requirements.
- Inspection and testing: Parts are inspected for performance to ensure required standards.
Materials we can make
Aluminum powder has the advantages of low density, poor thermal conductivity, good plasticity, etc. It is mainly used in the aerospace field, such as aircraft engines, fuel systems, etc., as well as in the field of automobile manufacturing, such as engines, transmission systems, etc.
Iron powder has high density, high hardness and good abrasion resistance, which is used to manufacture various mechanical parts and tools, automobile parts, household appliance parts and so on.
Copper powder is commonly used in the electronics industry and machinery manufacturing due to its good electrical and thermal conductivity.
Magnesium powder has light weight, high strength and good corrosion resistance, and is mainly used in aerospace, automobile manufacturing and electronics industries.
