Titanium powder is vital for modern manufacturing, especially in sintered metal and MIM. It’s known for its strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility, making it ideal for high-performance parts. This article explores its composition, benefits, uses, and standards, focusing on sintered metal and MIM.

Chemical composition

Titanium powder can be pure (CPTi) or an alloy like Ti-6Al-4V.

For CPTi

ElementTiONHFe
Percentage (%)≥99.5≤0.25≤0.03≤0.015≤0.20

For Ti-6Al-4V

ElementTiAlVFeCHON
Percentage (%)Balance5.5-6.753.5-4.6≤0.300.08≤0.015≤0.20≤0.05

Advantages of Titanium Powder

Titanium is exceptionally strong yet lightweight, making it perfect for aerospace parts where weight reduction is critical, enhancing fuel efficiency and performance.

Its protective oxide layer ensures durability in harsh environments, extending part lifespan, which is vital for industrial and marine applications.

Titanium is non-toxic and integrates well with the human body, making it the material of choice for medical implants, such as hip and knee replacements.

MIM enables the creation of intricate designs that traditional methods struggle to achieve, allowing for innovative component geometries in electronics and medical devices.

For small, detailed components produced in large quantities, MIM with titanium powder is economical compared to machining, reducing overall production costs.

MIM parts require minimal finishing, saving time and resources, which is particularly beneficial for high-volume production in automotive and consumer goods.

Titanium Powder Standards

ASTM F2885, Standard Specification for Metal Injection Molded Titanium-6-Aluminum-4-Vanadium Components for Surgical Implantation Applications, which covers the chemical, mechanical, and metallurgical requirements for Titanium-6-Aluminum-4V components used in surgical implants. The standard specifies oxygen content (e.g. 0.15 to 0.33 wt%) and tensile properties to ensure that components meet the stringent requirements of the medical industry.

Also relevant is ISO 22068, “Sintered Metal Injection Molding Materials – Specification,” which specifies chemical composition, mechanical and physical property requirements for sintered MIM materials.ASTM B348, “Standard Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Bars and Billets,” may also be applicable, but it is more general and covers raw materials used to produce titanium powder for MIM.
